It’s Ours!
We really do love EVERYTHING South Dakota! We have been here before and were crossing our fingers that our favorite boon-docking spot near Custer State Park would be available. Did we get it???
Let’s start at the beginning. On the way to South Dakota we stopped in Wyoming at a Harvest Host called “Our Wyoming Life”. It was a great overnight stay with a fun tour in the morning where, to Kim’s delight, she had the opportunity to hold and feed lots of baby animals! The RV parking was across the street from the farm. They provided electric ($15.00), and dump and water for free if you needed it. Their farm hand, Jeff, was amazing and helped us out throughout our stay. Their small farm store provided delicious eggs, steaks, bacon along with many other delicacies.
Boon-docking outside of Custer State Park did not disappoint! Norm followed his intuition and made a beeline for the boon-docking location. Just as we pulled onto the dirt road that led to our favorite spot there was a camper right behind us! Low and behold our beloved boon-docking spot was available and it was the last one to be found in that area. Now, I am sure if we went on the hunt we could have found another spot, but we really did have our heart set on this familiar and lovely area!
Last time we were in South Dakota the Wind Cave National Park was not open. This time we took a chance and drove over on a whim (yes, we could have checked the website but our internet was not too great and we decided to just take a chance). We arrived around 11:00a and had a cave tour at 2:00p. That gave us plenty of time to explore the area above ground and we met some awesome followers! I have to say that above ground was just as beautiful as the caves, just in a different way.
We went back to Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park and attempted a different hike this time. During our last visit we hiked the Sunday Gulch trail and it was AMAZING. This time we attempted the Black Elk Peak Loop, but took the Little Devil’s Tower Spur Trail part way up the loop. That was an amazing hike with some granite rock scrambling. By the time we got back down to the main trail we decided to call it a day and work our way back down to Sylvan Lake. You will remember we always say that we will complete the hike if we are up to it, but there is no shame in cutting it short! Do you see all those little red dots in one of the photos? Those are ladybugs! There were millions of them.
We love this area so much! There is no doubt in our minds that we will be back soon and often!
We absolutely love getting out there and meeting new people. We encourage all of our Mountain Beaches friends to shop small, shop local and to always be on the lookout to give a helping hand to those in need!
